From a recent visit to the City of Hiroshima, Japan. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945.
This is what the building looked like before the bomb was dropped.
Very sad, and today we buy so many products from the Japanese.
My father was Dr. Harvey Slatin, one of the scientists who worked as Los Alamos in the development of the bomb.
It only survived as much as it did because it was directly under the detonation. The blast wave went straight down, taking out the roof but leaving the vertical elements standing. If it hadn’t been dead center, the blast would have taken it from the side and nothing would be left but the foundation.
