A tintype, sometimes called a ferrotype, is a photograph created on a thin sheet of metal. The metal is coated black on one side to help the image stand out, and the photo is made on this side. Each tintype is unique because there is no negative, so copies cannot be made. The image that appears on the metal is reversed.
