.The Van Dyke Brown process was invented in 1842 by the English astronomer Sir John Herschel. This process is considered a printing-out technique. In this technique, an enlarged negative is placed directly onto a sensitized substrate. It is then exposed to light. The exposed areas turn brown, while the unexposed areas stay white.
