The Van Dyke Brown process was invented in 1842 by the English astronomer Sir John Herschel. It is known as a printing-out technique. To use this method, you place an enlarged negative directly on a sensitized surface and expose it to light. The parts that get exposed turn brown, while the areas that are not exposed remain white.
